Camp Hobart is the production company of director and producer Ruben Fleischer.

As an aspiring director at the turn of the century, in a naive attempt to procure work, I used to have to copy my short films and music videos onto VHS tapes, stuff them into padded envelopes, and send them off to various production companies, agencies, record labels, and studios - only for them to be ignored and/or rejected. As the cost of each of these submissions mounted, and my bank account rapidly depleted from all the experimental videos I was making, I taught myself how to build a website so I could create a digital portfolio of my work, as it was far cheaper (and quicker) to send a link than it was to make a trip to the post office.

Keep in mind, this was over 20 years ago, and long before YouTube, and my site was fairly novel for the time.  In addition to my videos, I also posted photos I took, and kept a news page updated with my latest struggles trying to make it as a director.  As I didn’t go to film school, I lacked a community of fellow aspiring filmmakers, but through my website, I was able to cultivate one. This gave me the confidence to keep making and sharing my low budget videos, and eventually one of them - DJ Format’s “We Know Something You Don’t Know,” a satirical take on a hip hop video featuring breakdancers wearing animal costumes - became an early viral hit.  Because of it, I was signed by production companies in both the UK and the US, and was quickly shooting music videos and commercials all over the world.

This led to other opportunities, like making a documentary about the infamous Gumball Rally, which allowed me to meet Rob Dyrdek, with whom I created Rob & Big, my first TV show. Bouncing between short form work and soft scripted reality TV, all the while shooting short films with, among others, comedian Nick Thune, my work finally evolved to a point where I was considered to direct feature films. I hit the jackpot when Amy Pascal hired me to make Zombieland, my first feature film.  The rest, as they say, is history, as that movie changed the trajectory of my life and career.

This site exists as a tribute to my original website www.ruben.fm - an archive of both my early work and more recent stuff.  I appreciate you stopping by and giving it a look!
